The Legal Service principally performs the function of assisting the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET), through the Secretary, in the adjudication of cases.
The lawyers in the Legal Service, along with other officers of the HRET who are members of the Bar, attend to each electoral protest and/ or quo warranto case filed at the beginning of the term. The lawyers are designated as Hearing Commissioners whose reports and recommendations, as submitted through the Secretary, are taken up in the Tribunal for appropriate action.
As Hearing Commisioners, they are clothe with the authority to conduct hearings, receive, collate and review all pieces of evidence submitted by the contending parties, issue subpoenas, and act as legal consultants during the revision and appreciation of ballots.
The Legal Service is currently headed by Atty. Josefina S. Olais, Director III.
